![]() CAMPING IN THE NORTH MAINE WOODS OF MAINENugent's Chamberlain Lake Camps:Our first set of camps is Nugent's Chamberlain Lake Camps. These camps can be found on page 56 of the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer published by DeLorme's Mapping Company. The camps are located in Township 7, Range 12 in the bottom right hand corner of the town where Little Leadbetter Stream empties into Chamberlain Lake. Al and Patty Nugent built these camps in 1936. We took over the lease from Patty in 1987. Since then, the log cabins have all been rebuilt and a few new log cabins have been added. All camps are set up for housekeeping and are insulated to stay toasty warm on the coldest of winter days.
In keeping with the rules of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (which is, by the way, a state park), these camps remain primitive. There is no running water in the cabins. There is, however, a shower in the back of our camp for everyone's use. There are two outside hydrants where drinkable water is available year round and there is a privy for each cabin.Cabins range in size from 2 double beds per camp to 4 single and two double beds per camp. We also have one old camp, which takes up to 20 people. All cabins have gaslights, gas refrigerators, gas cook stoves and wood stoves for heat. Each cabin is equipped with pots and pans, silverware, coffeepots, etc.
McNally's Ross Stream Camps:
In July of 1997, we purchased "McNallys' Ross Stream Camps" from Mycki McNally and Les Gardner, who had been running the camps for nearly 50 years.McNally's Camps are located in Township 12, Range 13 (Page 61 of the DeLormes's Atlas) on Chemquasabamticook Stream (Pronounced Sebemsicook). This stream is also known as Ross Stream and shall be referred to hereafter as Ross Stream for obvious reasons! Ross Stream, a very beautiful and fun canoeing stream, flows into Long Lake, which is part of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
The operation consists of 5 log cabins, an "overflow" camp and a main lodge. Cabins range in size from 2 person to 4 person camps. All cabins are equipped with wood stoves for heat and gas lights. There is running water to each of these cabins and they all have bathrooms with flush toilets, sinks and showers. They are very clean and comfortable camps.McNally's historically has been a fall hunting camp, but we are now using them on a year-round basis. Some are completely insulated; some are only partially insulated. All can be used in the winter. There is, however, no running water in the winter. These camps are located on a private gated road and can be driven to during spring, summer and fall. During the winter months, they are reachable by snowsled or cross country skis. | Cross Country Skiing and Snowmobiling | Copyright ©2000, Nugent-McNally Camps and Web Impressions
